- By Maureen Baraka Bonfante
I run, with the sun on my face.
I run, with the sun on my face.
With, rain rapping on my shoulders.
Like a rabbit or gazelle.
Like a puma or panther.
Predator or prey.
Right foot.
Left foot.
Gently fall.
Barely a whisper on falling leaves.
Breathe.
One.
One-Two-One.
Inhale in, one-two.
Exhale out.
Gel tabs, check.
Inhaler for just in cases, check.
Riccola, check.
Water, check.
“No Nonsense,” say my socks.
Trekking along the soft gray path,
Leading me deeper and deeper into,
Peace.
The fountain breathes out,
A magnificent plume,
As the sun rests against the horizon,
And, The Dakota’s are getting ready for sleep,
And, The Dakota’s are getting ready for sleep,
One more time.
One more time.
One more time.
Until, I complete four turns around,
Because I have time!
Because I can!
Run this dance of,
Predator versus prey.
Pray.
As the right and left foot take turns against
The gravel path leading me deeper and deeper into,
Peace.
Because I can!
Because she can’t!
Because he can’t!
Because they can’t!
Night cloaks the day in a navy embrace,
Until the last amber ray snuggles in,
One more time.
From 5K to 10.
From 10K to 15.
Running for Love.
Running for Me.
For Her, Him, They.
Because I can,
Run, with the sun on my face.
With, rain rapping on my shoulders.
Like a rabbit or gazelle.
Like a puma or panther.
Predator or prey.
Right foot.
Left foot.
Gently fall.
Breathe.
Today.
